Our Mission

Make it Happen for Yolo County is a small, non-profit providing furniture and household goods as well as support, resources and advocacy for underserved transition age youth of Yolo County. Those that age out of the foster care system have a high risk of homelessness.  Make it Happen provides the resources and items necessary to help towards creating a stable living situation for these young adults.

MIH serves transition age youth (TAY) between the ages of 16 to 24 who are transitioning to independent living after living in foster care or who have experienced homelessness or mental health challenges. While this time of life can be difficult for any youth, most can rely on family and friends to offer emotional and financial support, as well as the items needed to furnish an apartment or home.  For at-risk youth however, this support is often not available. Make it Happen for Yolo County helps address this void by collecting donated furniture and purchasing the new items necessary for setting up a home.

About Us

In 2025 we begin our eleventh year of being a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. With the exception of a part-time paid Executive Director we continue to be all volunteer. Our first year we helped 12 youth. Our goal for 2025 is to provide 65 youth with everything from furniture to shower curtains and appliances to mattresses and bicycles. From college students to single parents to formerly homeless youth, we help every one of our eligible referrals create a home.

Our Impact

250+

Youth helped since 2014

We started with 12 foster youth in 2014. Since then we have expanded to assist other under resourced Yolo County transition age youth. We have increased our programs to include bicycles, support for the Yolo County Independent Living Program and advocacy for this population.

65

Our goal for 2025

We expect to serve 65 youth in 2025. Our referrals come from UC Davis Guardian Scholars, Shores of Hope, Yolo County Child Welfare Services, Yolo County Probation, Yolo County CASA, and others.

4.8/5

Client satisfaction

We routinely survey the youth we serve on our performance, communication and the items they receive. We are so pleased that the vast majority of responses were 5/5.

Help Create a Home.

The youth we serve usually live in small apartments or a rent a room in a home. The furniture we supply needs to be relatively lightweight, small, easy to move, and in good working condition.

We accept donations of:

  • Small kitchen tables & chairs

  • Small couches or loveseats (no sofa beds or recliners, please)

  • Small shelving units

  • Small living room chairs (no recliners, please)

  • End tables & coffee tables

  • Desks and Office Chairs

  • Nightstands

  • Small Dressers

At times we are fully stocked with certain items and may have to decline your offer of furniture. Please continue to consider us!

In their own words…

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you for taking the time to go through our wish list and get us what we need for a smooth move in.  Everyone was so nice and helpful, it really warmed our hearts and made me feel so welcome in the community. Last night we put the finishing touches on our studio and we are so happy with our little home.”

“Make it Happen has helped me start on the right foot and made living on my own less stressful. I am lost for words, thank you for making my transition into my second year easy. It’s foundations like these that keep students motivated in school and allow us to overcome the challenges in life.”

From a referring TAY probation officer…………….

He was very particular about setting up his items. it made his new apartment feel like his. Thank you so much for all you do for these kids. It is much appreciated. He was very happy and humbled that all of this stuff belongs to him.
